Rogue or Broke: An Interview with Fire Starter Danielle LaPorte

Danielle LaPorte, author of The Fire Starter Sessions, is one of my absolute entrepreneurial heroes. She is the mastermind behind whitehot truth – which you truly should subscribe to immediately.  I am really excited and grateful to have this interview to share with you guys.

In your bio you state that following the success of Style Statement: Live by Your Own design you built a big media presence and then went rogue – what does that mean for you? How has going rogue enabled your success with White Hot Truth?

Rogue was the only choice. Rogue or soul death. Rogue or broke. And it changed everything. EVERYTHING.

I was biking home from yoga tonight and thought, Wow, I’m really living the life I want to live. And of course, there’s so much more I desire, but each day unfolds more into my creative freedom and how I nourish myself and the people I love, and even the people I haven’t met yet.

Freedom is the ultimate nourishment.

You distinguish yourself as a writer vs. blogger, can you elaborate on that point?

I loath the word blog. It’s not pretty. But we’re stuck with it. That’s an aside, really.

Most specifically, I philosophize, and I mostly do that in writing, and I mostly present that on the internet. That’s the Big Real of what I do, and what so many of us do. We’re bigger than our “posts” and “tweets” and when you keep your eye on that, when you let your definitions of yourself be deeply accurate, it influences your creative approach.

What is your target audience for The Fire Starter Sessions?

Anyone who wants to do meaningful work and make money doing it. Being self-directed and entrepreneurial is a colossal bonus.

What would you consider the pros and cons of purchasing the ebook vs. booking a session with you personally?

With digital book, you can meander and dig in at your own pace. It can be an unfolding journey.

A 1:1 session with me is more like a jet plane tour. It’s very intense strategy, recognition, idea-raising, and it typically requires sometime time to process and execute on.

As you describe the FireSS, you seem refreshingly confident and passionate about your own work, do you have any advice for how to acknowledge and revere your own worth, and become confident enough to pursue the life of your dreams?

There’s an exercise in The Fire Starter Sessions called Glory Boarding. I’ll give y’all a sneak peek here:

WRITE OUT YOUR VICTORIES + ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

Sing your praises. If you’re feeling too shy to blow your own horn, answer like your BFF or your mama would—or the other person who loves you most in the world. Go back as far in your life as you need to for evidence of greatness.

And as for the confidence part, start with blind faith. Build your Do Stuff Muscle.

In your advice to bloggers and those with start up webpages you tell them to blow their own horn, a powerful message, but do you have any further advice for those who worry that they are not good enough or are unclear about the message that they want to relay with their product?

Give yourself six month to get clear on your voice. Not six months of THINKING about what your message is, but six months of writing about and expressing whatever you think your message might be. You need to see it and feel it. And after you’ve had some experimenting time, then it’s time to get responsible and take your art and swerive to the next level. You’ev GOT to be clear about your message if you want to be of true service.

I get the sense from your affiliate program that you promote the idea cash/love idea of mutually benefitting from supporting others online, is this true? how has this benefitted you professionally/socially?

Commerce has to be mutual for it to be sustainable. And generosity is way more fun.

I also get the sense (mostly from personal communication with you but from White Hot Truth as well) that you are grateful and responsive even to your lowest common denominator. (ie. you respond to emails, follow back on twitter, thank people for promoting your business ventures) Is this a facet of your business plan? How does doing this contribute to your success both financially and professionally?

I don’t have a business plan. I just want to be creatively expressed and loving. And, like, good manners are good karma. The result of growing my lil’ empire is that I’m less able to say “hey thanks” to each person, but I’m more able to influence good things for some people. It’s all about proportion…and the energy of gratitude.

And what I REALLY want to know is, what is your secret for being so productive and driven? Do you sleep? (I’m hoping you drink lots and lots of coffee.)

I’ve never had so much as a sip of coffee. Bizarre, I know. Just not into it.

Well, there’s no secret to being driven. I’ve got stuff to say and I want to say it. I’m committed to a bold life. I’m hungry for adventure. I’m achingly grateful for the love in my life and how it’s all rolling out. I desire peace and knowledge and cash and laughter.

Productive? Self compassion goes a long way in terms of productivity. So I work when I want and if that means later nighters, I do it. And I boogie off when I want, and if that means a road trip without email, then I make it happen. I skip TV altogether, I ruthlessly unsubscribe to anything that is medicore, I hang with happy people, I cry if I need to cry, I hire experts, I take lot’s of hot baths. It all works out when you’re doing what you do on purpose.

Much Love,
Danielle
xoxo

WOW! I’m not familiar with whitehot truth, but I want to be!

I loved what Danielle says about being a writer vs. a blogger. I feel in my heart that I am a writer – I love it with passion and gusto – but use the term blogger to refer to myself I think out of fear. Blogger to me seems less “real” and thus using it for myself seems less inflated. However, I think I need to work on my confidence as a writer/blogger/purveryor of amazing ideas. And since I think language and how we use it is incredibly important, I am going to focus on changing my terminology. Thanks, Danielle (and Mara!) !

I loved your comment about Danielle’s commitment to supporting people, even down to the “lowest common denominator.” One of the things I admire most about her is that as she builds what she does, she isn’t doing it (at least as far as I can tell) by hitting up the power bloggers and using them exclusively to pimp what she does. There’s a realness and a lack of buying into some false notion of hierarchy. I’m so glad that others notice this about her, as well. And may I also add my praises to anyone else who’s considering the FSS?

I just love love love your advice from the Fire Starter Sessions.

I’ve so done this over the past 6 months or more. Just writing, getting it out & molding myself publicly. Literally it may feel like if I was walking down the street naked in the middle of the day but all well liberating too.

Expressing, articulating, shaping & molding the message in front of an audience is strangely, scary every time I push “publish’ & yet as liberating as breathing fresh air.

Maybe that’s why less people take the risk?

I adore this interview. Thank you so much.
